James “Hoot” Lawrence Gibson, age 75, passed away on March 4, 2026, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Hoot was born on May 28, 1950, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to the late William and Tessie Gibson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joey Gibson.
Hoot was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He was known for his friendly nature, natural charisma, and a personality that truly stood out. Family and friends often described him as quite the character and someone who was genuinely one of a kind. One of his most notable traits was his impressive vocabulary, which never failed to leave an impression on those who had the pleasure of speaking with him.
Hoot also owned and operated his own tree-cutting business, proudly referring to himself as a “tree surgeon.” He will always be remembered for his unique personality, his sense of humor, and the joy he brought to those around him.
Survivors include his daughters; his brother, John Wayne Gibson, Sr., of Louisiana; his sister, Willian Blue Richmond of Louisiana; several nieces and nephews; and many friends who will cherish his memory.
All services will be held privately by the family at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com. Bradley’s Funeral Home of Marion, Virginia, is serving the family of James Gibson.
