Welton Custis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metropolitan Funeral Service - Berkley Chapel on Feb. 18, 2026.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1

Welton Lee Custis, Jr., affectionately known as Welp, was born on March 3, 1946, in Norfolk County, Virginia, to the late Welton Lee Custis, Sr., and Fannie Mae Lunford. On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, God peacefully called Welton home.

At an early age, Welton was dedicated to Christ at St. James A.M.E. Church. Later in life, he united with First Baptist Church, West Munden, under the leadership of Dr. John L. Ashby, where he worshiped and enjoyed singing in the Male Chorus. He also participated in the churchs Veterans Club.

Welton received his education at Waterford Elementary School and later graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1965. He was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a service he honored with pride throughout his life.

Following his military service, Welton began his career with the United States Postal Service. He later continued his employment with the Norfolk Ford Assembly Plant, where he worked faithfully for many years until his retirement.

Welton was married twice and was blessed with loving children: Adrienne Kaye Custis, Sherry Marcano, Mia ONeal, Markita Custis, Milton Bray, Welton Lee Custis, III, and Omar Custis.

Welton truly enjoyed life. He loved playing cards with his Cuffee Center friends and family cookouts, and traveling with family and friends on football bus trips. He enjoyed tailgating at Norfolk State University, attending the Cascade Reunion, watching Westerns, playing softball with the Vikings, organizing, and coaching a youth baseball team, and proudly wearing his Vietnam Veteran apparel while sharing his war hero stories.

Welton leaves to cherish his memory children, Adrienne Kaye Custis, Sherry Marcano(Oscar), Mia Oneal, Markita Custis, Milton Bray, Welton Lee Custis, III, and Omar Custis (Alexandria); siblings, Phyllis Sherrill (Walter), Alta Custis, and June Foote; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

– You may be out of our sight, but you will never be out of our hearts.
