John Leslie Dykes, 72, of Weatherford, Texas, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

John was born on October 6, 1953, in Frederick, Oklahoma. He graduated from Jacksboro High School, where he proudly played football from 1969 to 1972. A highlight of his high school years was being a member of the 1971 Jacksboro High School State Championship football team — an accomplishment he carried with pride throughout his life. The bonds formed during those years and the discipline learned on that field remained important to him long after graduation.

On January 3, 1976, John married the love of his life, Debra Lawler, in Arlington, Texas. In January of this year, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary — a milestone that reflected a lifetime of commitment, partnership, and love.

John began his career working for the ARCO Pipeline. He later devoted many years of service to labor organizations, working with OCAW, PACE, and the United Steelworkers (USW) as an International Representative. He was passionate about standing up for working men and women and took great pride in the work he did throughout his career.

John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Debra Dykes; his daughters, Amy Phifer, and Lori Ross and husband, Matt; and his beloved grandchildren, Brody, Maleigh, and Gracie Phifer, and Caleb and Colton Ross. Nothing brought him more joy than his family.

John had a deep love for music and was a gifted musician. He played the saxophone, guitar, harmonica, and piano, and he loved nothing more than getting together to jam. Through music, he formed countless friendships and built lasting bonds with those who shared his passion. Music was one of his greatest joys and a gift he shared generously. He also loved the outdoors and cherished taking his grandchildren camping at the lake in the RV, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dr. Mary Jane Dykes; his father, John H. Dykes; and his sister, Lora Louise Biddy.

A viewing will be held Monday, March 2, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at White’s Funeral Home, 130 Houston Avenue, Weatherford, Texas 76086.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at White’s Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens, 5600 Mineral Wells Highway, Weatherford, Texas 76088.

John will be remembered for his steady strength, his deep love for his family, and his lifelong love of music.
