My friend, Joe White's persona was magnetic: his laughter uplifting, his passion refreshing, and his hugs strong and so sincere. He was most-resilient and the hardest-working, scrappy, cool guy (kewlguy) I knew: limping along, navigating buses and trains to get to work and meet up with friends across the Twin Cities (for Lenten fish fry's). Joe was the first friend I made at St. Frances Cabrini Church, twenty plus years ago, after helping him host a LGBTQ event. Our connection was immediate. From that point on, I've called Joe my "brother". We'd sit together in church whenever we were both in attendance, listening intently, participating fully, whispering little asides. He got close to my mom and called her "Mom" during those years, too, which was so sweet for both him and her. Joe, along with my mom, Duane (another Cabrini friend) and myself frequented other church's fall festivals after Mass, enjoying eating, dancing, and thrift-shopping for treasures. We referred to ourselves as "mom, dad and the 2 kids". I now can imagine Joe's spirit-energy dancing with his beloved and treasured mom, sister and sister-in-law, plus with my mom and Duane again. Peace, brother. You are free from your body now. Another angel to talk to.
