Karen Lewis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home - Poland on Feb. 24, 2026.
Karen Margaret Lewis, 82, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026 at St. Mary Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana.

She was born on February 20, 1943 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Layden) Slaven.

Karen's life was defined by the way she loved. She was the steady, selfless center of her family-protective, calm, patient, and always putting others before herself. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy and she took great pride in taking care of them throughout their childhood. She treasured every moment with them, whether she was drawing their portraits, sketching flowers with her granddaughter, sewing clothes for their dolls, or watching their sporting events, she never missed the opportunity to spend time with them. Caring for others was simply in her nature.

That same heart carried into her work. Karen began her career at General Fireproofing before stepping away to devote herself to raising her children. Later, with determination and quiet drive, she returned to school and earned both her bachelor's degree in business education in 1983 and her master's degree in education in 1993 from Youngstown State University. She went on to teach for nine years at ITT Technical Institute and six years at Choffin Career Center. Teaching was her passion. She was genuinely invested in the success of her students. She also gave her time to Senior Volunteer Services and taught GED classes, always looking for ways to help others move forward.

In her free time, Karen loved reading, music, dancing, and riding with her husband on their Harley-Davidson. She could always be found spending time with her sister Patricia, who was her best friend. Above all, she will be remembered for her generous spirit and the quiet, faithful way she showed up for the people she loved. Her life was a testament to kindness, devotion, and a love that never asked for anything in return.

Karen leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband of over 60 years, James R. Lewis; her children, Jennifer (Tim) Lewis- Aey, Jeffrey (fiancée Felicia Mesaros) Lewis, and James (fiancée Angela Conti) Lewis; her grandchildren, Taylor (Scott) Williams, Ashley (Michael) Audi, Mackenzie (Darren Brandt) Lewis, Robert Lewis, and Kerrigan Lewis; great-grandson, Grayson; her siblings, Donald (Marilyn) Slaven, Harry (Mary) Slaven, and Patricia Edwards; her brother-in-law, Jack (Margie) Lewis; sister-in-law, Joan Lewis; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Slaven; and a sister, Darlene Thomas.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, followed immediately by a memorial celebration of her life beginning at 12:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Karen's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center for their compassionate care and unwavering dedication to ensuring Karen's comfort and well-being.
