Margaret Young Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - Tidewater Drive Chapel on Feb. 19, 2026.
Margaret Louise Sands Hughes Young, age 74, passed away peacefully in her hometown of Norfolk, VA, on February 15, 2026. Born November 3, 1951 to Albert James Sands and Eva Mare Woodward Sands, she was predeceased by her parents as well as four cousins she cherished as brothers, and many other beloved family members.

Margaret was a loving mother and grandmother, and her greatest joy was being a part of her family's lives. She is survived by her former husband, Michael T. Hughes, and his partner William; son Michael J. Hughes and his wife Stephanie; her daughter, Michelle Stanley and her partner Robert; daughter Marianne T. Bowman and her husband Phillip; and her son Patrick Young. She also leaves behind over a dozen grandchildren, numerous adopted children, and she recently became a great grandmother, all of whom will forever carry her love in their hearts.

She had a vibrant spirit and many passions. She spent most of her life close to the water that she loved, becoming an accomplished swimmer and lifeguard in her younger years. A lifelong lover of music, Margaret enjoyed singing, often filling her home with songs. Up with People, bagpipes, and Elvis Presley were among her favorites. She was an avid reader and enjoyed quiet moments with a good book. Creative at heart, she spent hours doing Tri-Chem painting and all kinds of arts and crafts. Her most cherished craft was crocheting. She would make blankets for each of the grandchildren when they were born. She found joy in solving Sudoku puzzles, playing Bingo, music trivia, and card games with her family and cheering on her beloved Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders). And everyone knew how much she loved her Olympics. She was a dedicated volunteer, especially supporting veterans through organizations such as the American Legion Post 327 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3160. She was also a proud and steadfast support of the United States military.

Margaret will be remembered for her creativity, her loyalty, and her deep love for family, country, and community, her love of Bingo, and for sharing a smile with all those she encountered. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will continue to bring comfort to those who knew her.

A visitation will be held at Hollomon-Brown, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Saturday, February 21, 2026 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A service will be held at the same location the following day, Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 1PM. Condolences to the family may be offered at www.hollomon-brown.com
