Arvil Boyd Cyphers, Jr.

1941 - 2025

Arvil Boyd Cyphers, Jr.-known simply as Boyd-passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 83 on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Born in Scott County, Virginia, Boyd later made his home in Kingsport, Tennessee, where he raised his family and built a life full of love, hard work, and laughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Cyphers, and his son, Chris Rogers, both of whom he loved deeply.

He leaves behind his daughter, Tonya Bennert (and her husband David), his sister Jeannie Wax (and husband Sam), his brother David Cyphers (and wife Patty), along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who adored him.

Boyd worked for 42 years at Mead Paper Company (now Domtar Kingsport Packaging Mill), where he was known for his strong work ethic and steady, reliable presence.

Boyd prided himself as a master tinkerer. He maintained four well-stocked workshops and could fix just about anything. If it had moving parts-or even if it didn't-he'd figure it out and have fun doing it.

He had a lifelong love for horses, especially Tennessee Walking Horses. In his younger years, he trained them with a soft hand and a big heart. The annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration was a highlight of his year and something he looked forward to along with many other horse shows in the region. Ask him a question about horses, and be prepared for a lesson in horse breeding, horse care, and horse training, as well as a few stories about horses he knew.

Boyd also had a serious case of wanderlust. What began with a powder blue Dodge hippy van turned into a lifelong adventure traveling the country with his family. Over time, he upgraded to his dream ride-a 40-foot diesel pusher motor coach-and made countless memories on the road.

Most recently, Boyd moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, with his daughter and son-in-law. He quickly fell in love with the place-especially the coastal breezes and the graceful live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. He often said it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.

In his younger days, Boyd's friends nicknamed him "Goof" because of his playful spirit and his talent for making people laugh and pulling lighthearted pranks. He was known for the mischievous sparkle in his eye and a kind, gentle spirit that saw the best in everyone. Boyd didn't need a spotlight-he simply showed up, lent a hand, and made life better for those around him. His quick wit, subtle sense of humor and positive attitude made for quick friendships for those who were lucky enough to meet him.

He'll be missed more than words can say-but we'll carry his stories, his laughter, and his love with us always.

I have nothing but good memories of Boyd. I met Boyd in the 1960s, before I married Sharon´s sister Alma. So for the past 60 years there was always a good friendship. My only negative is that I didn´t get a chance to see him after he moved to GA. But I am so thankful that Alma and I were able to spend a long weekend with him this past March.

I had the great pleasure in meeting Boyd and his wife Sharon for only a brief time, but this time meant a lot to me. They welcomed me in their home as if they always knew me. On day 1, Boyd was joking around and making me laugh. He had a lot of interesting conversations that I so much enjoyed listening to. He was very intelligent,& had so many memories to share. He talked about his family a lot, & you could feel the love he held for his family. 1particular day, I had locked my keys in my truck, as I had came out to assist them with some light chores. That was the 1 day all of my family was to far away from me and to busy to come to my rescue. When Boyd heard I had to call the locksmith,& pay he told his wife to make sure I wasn´t hungry& get me a big plate of food. He told me to eat 1st then worry about getting in my truck later,& just relax, it´s ok. The time I had the amazing opportunity to get to know him & Sharon, He was always so kind and loved to see people. I´m sending many continued prayers for comfort and strength for his family. ( he would often joke about me riding in the car w Sharon,& told me I may need to gear up).
