Betty Stubblefield Obituary

Betty Baxter Stubblefield

May 27, 1931 -

December 5, 2025

KINGSPORT - Betty Stubblefield of Kingsport, TN, passed away on December 5, 2025, at the age of 94. She began a life dedicated to others in Lewisburg, TN. Even as a young girl, she volunteered at the local hospital and decided on a career in nursing. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Memphis. While there, she met her beloved husband, Dr. Leslie J. Stubblefield. The newlyweds moved to Huntland, TN, where they raised children and ran a rural medical clinic. This was one of the most rewarding and happiest times in her life. Betty and Stubbs relocated to Kingsport in 1969, where she spent the rest of her life. She enjoyed chair caning, basket weaving and restoring antique furniture and lamps. She served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and neighbor. She was a member of Northeast Church of Christ for 60 years.

Betty loved animals and was especially fond of her sweet Yorkshire Terrier, Winston, whom she fed like a king. She also loved the Vols, rarely missing a University of Tennessee basketball or football game. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Betty was famous amongst her grandkids and their friends for her milkshakes, chocolate pound cakes, strawberry pies and other delicious food. She always wanted to take care of you.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Stanley and Ellis Baxter; her husband Dr. Leslie J. Stubblefield; and her sister Hilda Lasater.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Leslie Hart and husband Joe, Lisa Rogers and husband Bob, Lydia Smith and husband Matt; her son, Dr. Steve Stubblefield and wife Tami; nine grandchildren, Robert Hart, Josie Jones and husband Brett, Ruthie Rogers, Willa Rogers, Warren Smith, Mary Frances Smith, Henry Smith, Chris Stubblefield, and Shelby Stubblefield; and her sister Kathy Grimes.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Preston Place, Smokey Mountain Hospice and Caregivers Yvonne and Cindy for their loving care of Betty.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, 2025 from 1:30pm – 3:00pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tim Hall officiating.

A private burial will take place Monday, December 22 at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
