DUFFIELD, VA - Brenda Joyce McElyea Pearcy (age 76) went to be with her Lord on Monday, October 14, 2024 at her home in Duffield, Virginia. She was born in Pennington Gap, VA. Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Inez Shupe Dorton, Rev. Oscar "Tye" Dorton, and Denver McElyea.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harley Pearcy; sister, Norma Fields; and brother Michael (Kim) Dorton, all of Duffield; Ken McElyea, Barbara McElyea, brother and sister in Johnson City, TN and sister, Diane Benesh and husband Gary of North Wilksboro, NC. Also remaining to miss her are several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunt, cousins, neighbors, friends, and her church family at Jasper Central Baptist Church.
Brenda was a proud graduate of Rye Cove High School and Mountain Empire Community College.
She was a former employee of the Kingston Center for Assisted Living, and Mountain Empire Community College. She was a faithful member of Jasper Central Baptist Church.
Brenda was a loving and kind soul. Her favorite pastimes were reading, talking (she knew everybody), and cooking for others to enjoy.
The family will receive visitors from 12 to 2 pm Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Jasper Central Baptist Church, 136 Jasper Rd, Duffield, VA (Jasper Community). A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation at 2:00 pm, conducted by Rev. Wayne Thomas and Rev. Jackie Frazier. Music will be provided by Linda Gilley and Wayne Maness. Brenda will be laid to rest following the service in the Pearcy Family Cemetery in Duffield, VA.
Harley has requested that pallbearers be the "kids she has helped raise": Chris Dorton, Shane McElyea, Ray Shelton, Jeremy Glass, Kayla Evans, Joey Evans, and Lukas Shelton. The family wishes to thank all the county and area fire departments and rescue squads, the sheriff's office, and Virginia State Police for all their efforts. We also appreciate the friends and neighbors that prepared the cemetery. Thanks also go to all those who've provided immediate assistance to Harley after his unimaginable loss.
