ROAN MOUNTAIN - Calder Gilliams Smoot, age 74, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Wythe County Community Hospital. Calder was born in Alexandria, VA to the late William Smoot 3rd and Nancy Watts Smoot.
Calder Smoot was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a remarkable presence in the lives of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generous spirit, his quiet grace, and the strength of his character that touched his family, friends, and community alike. Raised in McLean, Virginia, Calder graduated from Langley High School in 1969 and from Emory and Henry Colege in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in political science. Following his graduation, he began his career with Appalshop Films before pursuing his passion for hospitality by opening The Soup Kitchen Annex, a well-loved restaurant in Johnson City, Tennessee. He later worked briefly for Cracker Barrel before dedicating 37 years of his life to serving as a property manager in Beech Mountain, North Carolina, where his hard work and dedication left a lasting mark. Beyond his professional achievements, Calder cherished the simple joys of life – gardening, canoeing, hiking, and cooking – and found peace and fulfillment in nature and in creating memories with his family. His legacy of love, compassion, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Those left to cherish Calder's memory include his wife of 48 years, Elaine Smoot, of the home; son, John Smoot, of the home; brother, Will Smoot (Heidi), of VA; Sister, Eleanor, of South Carolina; Nieces: Brittany, Lorie and Elizabeth; nephew, William; sister-in-law, Marilyn.
