KINGSPORT - Charles W. Flanary, 76 of Kingsport, TN was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Charles was born in Coeburn, VA to the late Howard P. Flanary and Elizabeth K. Flanary. He graduated from Dungannon High School in 1965 where he was a standout basketball player scoring 1,000 points. He was a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War and was drafted to the Army in 1967. Charles loved his country and was proud to serve in Vietnam where he received 3 Bronze Star Medals for Valor, 2 Purple Hearts for wounds he received in action and also received the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4933, DAV Bristol #39, Vietnam Veterans of America and the American Legion Post #145. After his tour and service to his country, Charles returned home and worked 20 years as a surveyor for several companies. He was also the Sanitation Manager for the City of Bristol and retired from there after 7 years.
Other than his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Flanary; sister, Bobbie Farmer; brothers-in-law, Don Farmer and Joe Meade.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Reba Kaye Flanary; daughters, Angela Zwick and husband John, Mary Beth Still and husband David; son Charles Flanary, Jr.; granddaughters, Kaitlyn Kaiser, Lauren Urbani and Jaiden Flanary; great granddaughter, Kalli Kaiser; great-grandsons, Donny Zwick and Kamden Kaiser; sisters, Betty Salyer and husband Myron and Margaret Meade; brother Johnny Flanary and wife Jayne; sister-in-law, Barbara Flanary; along with many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 12:00 Noon in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joe Kern officiating. Pallbearers will be Logan Dade, Brad Speaks, Cole Speaks, Mason Speaks, Rodney Urbani and Darrell Meade. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Speaks, David Still, Joe Greene. A military graveside service will be conducted at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Military Honors provided by V.F.W. Boone Dam Post #4933 honor guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to V.F.W. 4933 Boone Dam, 830 Minga Rd., Kingsport, TN 37663.
