Charles Horton Obituary

Charles Herbert "Herb" Horton

March 26, 1932 -

December 31, 2024

Psalm 73:26, "My flesh and heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever."

Charles Herbert "Herb" Horton went to be with the Lord, Tuesday evening, December 31, 2024, after a period of declining health.

Charles was born March 26, 1932, in Hawkins County, to the late John and Callie Horton, and moved to Kingsport during his teen years. He was a proud patriot and loved his country very much, having served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.

He was a loving husband and father. He was married to Peggy (Samples) Horton for 67 years until her passing in 2020. He often told his family how proud he was of each one and how much he loved them.

Charles was a member of Victory Baptist Church where he was saved and baptized.

He was an encourager and always looked for ways to help those in need. He loved being outdoors, gardening, planting flowers and loved afternoons on the porch swing.

Charles was the owner of Horton's Welding Equipment & Repair for over 50 years and serviced many companies in the area and beyond. He was instrumental in keeping welding equipment repaired for the crews building I-26 from Erwin to Asheville.

In addition to his wife, and parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Pleas Horton and Otis Horton; sisters, Vergie Blair and Sue Stapleton; brothers-in-law, Denver Blair and James Stapleton; in-laws, Robert and Mary Samples; and nephews, Chris Horton and Randel Blair.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Andrea (Randall) Anderson and Letha (Randy) Lane; grandchildren, Tiffany (Peter) Jothen, Austin Anderson, Seth (Lydia) Lane, and Emily Lane; great-granddaughter, Amelia Grace Jothen; sisters-in-law, Drusilla Horton and Willie Horton; brother-in-law, Wayne (Evelyn) Samples; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 4, 2025, 1:00-2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.

A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Dr. Phil Hoskins and Pastor Joe Hill officiating. Music will be provided by Janet Asbury.

Military Graveside honors conducted by The American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 will follow at 3:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kiley Perethian, Kathleen Powers, NP, Dr. Erin Reid, Dr. Zachary Birch of Holston Valley Hospital, and the staff of Wilcox Hall (2nd and 3rd floors) for their kindness and care of Mr. Horton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Disabled American Veterans (P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301) in memory of Mr. Horton.

Herb gave me a job at his business in 1977 when my wife and I were first married . We had just had our son and he hired me on with a pay raise above what I was making currently. My wife Barbara Thompson was a neighbor of the Hortons and knew them very well. For that act of kindness I will always be grateful. My dad Wayne is Peggy's brother. My condolences to Andrea and Letha. Love y'all much!
