KINGSPORT- Clara Josephine Wininger, lovingly known as Jo, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on May 19, 1942, in Kingsport, Tennessee, she was a lifelong East Tennessean whose faith, warmth, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Jo was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Percy "Sonny" Wininger; her parents, Juanita and C.K. Rogers; and her brother, C.K. Rogers Jr. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Davis; her children, Beverly Sue Wolfe (Gary) and John Wininger; her grandchildren, Ryan Wolfe (Rose), Merrick Wininger (Jerica), and Greta Hyder; and five great-grandchildren.
Jo earned her bachelor's degree from Hiwassee College and spent many years shaping young lives as an elementary school teacher at Carters Valley Elementary School. A devoted Christian, she lived her life with grace and kindness, finding joy in gardening, reading, and the company of her family.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Church Hill Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, an organization close to their hearts.
