Dennis Ked Byrd July 19, 1953- May 15, 2024
GATE CITY, VA - Dennis Ked Byrd, age 70, died on May 15, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. Dennis was born in Kingsport, TN, on July 19, 1953, to the late Ked Wheeler and Mary Sue Shelton Byrd. He graduated from Gate City High School and John Tyler Community College. Dennis was a licensed embalmer and had worked for area funeral homes and firms in Richmond. He eventually owned and operated Olde Dominion Embalming Service in Richmond. Dennis was a member of Montrose Chapter #176 Order of Eastern Star and a life member of Thomas N. Davis Masonic Lodge # 351 A.F. & A.M. both of Richmond, VA. He attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James Logan, Jr. and Bess Watkins Shelton; his paternal grandparents, Frank Golden and Cora Pierson Byrd; sisters, Pamela Byrd Quillen (Ronald) and Freda Byrd Head (Ben); niece, August Lynn Broadwater Caudill; and his faithful dog, Rose.
Survivors are sister, Joyce Byrd McConnell (Bill); brother, Dale Byrd (Brenda); nieces, Marci McConnell Gore (Randy) and their son Caleb, Maria Byrd Hess (Jacob) and their son Jonah, Lyndsey Quillen McConnell (Matt) and their son Landrey; nephew, Ked Byrd (Kadie), Logan Byrd (Haley) and their sons Bishop and Augustus, Bryan Head (Marnie) and their children Blake, Emmerson, Gray, Griffith, Piper, Jo and Seven; August's children, Brady Porter and Meadow Caudill; brother-in-law, Ben Head; uncle, Charlie Shelton; and good friend, Eddie Glen.
Dennis donated his body to Restore Life and will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at Colonial Funeral Home on June 8, 2024. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM and the funeral service at noon with the Reverend Will Shewey officiating. His sister Joyce McConell will deliver the eulogy. Music will be provided by Richard Gillenwater and Dale Jett. Pallbearers will be nephews and Eddie Glen.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Scott County Humane Society, 186 Single Tree Rd, Gate City, VA 24251; Shriner's Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 US, Shades of Grace United Methodist Church, 313 East Sullivan St, Kingsport, TN 37660 or charity of one's choice.
