ROGERSVILLE - Donald "Don" Mitchell, age 74, of Rogersville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, with his loving family by his side after an extended illness.
Born on February 6, 1951, in Kingsport, Tennessee, Don graduated from Church Hill High School in 1969 and later attended Walters State Community College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army until the birth of his eldest daughter. During his military service, Don earned recognition as a sharpshooter, a distinction that reflected both his discipline and skill.
In 1974, Don began what would become a lifelong career in law enforcement-a calling he pursued with dedication, integrity, and courage. He served in multiple roles throughout the years and retired from the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department in 2020 after more than four decades of service. His deep commitment to public safety and justice made him a respected figure in the community and a trusted mentor to many in the field.
Don was a man of many talents and trades-also working in construction, as a truck driver, and as a business owner-but always found his way back to law enforcement, his true passion. He never met a stranger and was known for his easy conversation, generous spirit, and wise counsel.
A devoted father, brother, grandfather, and uncle, Don is survived by his daughters, Tina Wolfe (Lynn) and Gina Jones (Shawn); his sister, Jeanette Mitchell; his grandchildren: Cody Morelock, Caitlin Morelock, Joseph "Bert" Jones, Dakota Burton, and Alex Burton. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles, all of whom will miss him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and George Mitchell, and his brothers, David and Marty Mitchell.
Don loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had a deep compassion for animals and a heart that never turned away someone in need. Most of all, Don loved the Lord and was a Christian man who lived his faith through service, kindness, and devotion to his family and community.
Donald Mitchell was a man of strength, integrity, and great love. He will be missed more than words can express, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Family will receive friends from 2pm-4pm on Sunday, August 3rd at Christian-Sells Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will begin at 4pm with Pastor Allen McMillian officiating. Online condolences may be sent to the family at
