Donald J. Salyer June 18, 1945 - August 5, 2024
KINGSPORT - Donald J. Salyer, 79, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 5, 2024, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born June 18, 1945, in Scott County, VA to the late Grover Jack and Katherine Byrd Salyer.
Don was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother who made family his main priority. He adored his loving wife of fifty-eighty years, Sandra, and was especially fond of his grandchildren.
Don retired from Eastman Chemical Company in the Organic Chemicals Division following fifty-four years of service.
He was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church.
Don enjoyed woodworking, fishing, traveling, genealogy, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Robert Darrin Salyer; son-in-law, Chad King; brothers-in-law, David Millsap and Jay Burdge; sister-in-law, Brenda Wilcox Burdge.
Those left to cherish Don's memory are his wife, Sandra Wilcox Salyer; daughters, Heather King, and Holly Durham (Casey); grandchildren, Isabella King, Gabriella King, Gage Durham, and Fiona Durham; great-granddaughter, Ivy Fair Holm; brothers, Nuten Salyer (Judy) and Marvin Salyer (Linda); sisters, Virginia Olinger (Dillard) and Sandra Kaye Olinger (Kenneth); best friend of sixty-one years, Dwain Reed; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 8, 2024, 5:00-6:45 pm in the funeral home chapel.
A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 7:00 pm with Dr. Phil Hoskins and Pastor Vince Salyer officiating. Sheila Sproles will provide the music.
Graveside Service will be conducted Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11:00 am at Walnut Chapel Church Cemetery, Gate City, VA. Those serving as pallbearers, Gage Durham, Mike Lambert, Travis Olinger, Shawn Burdge, Nuten Salyer, and Casey Durham.
