PINEY FLATS - Doug McArthur Lawson, a cherished resident of Piney Flats, TN, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 81.

Born and raised in Norton, VA, Douglas embarked on a life of service and dedication. He proudly served in the Army for six years starting in 1959, demonstrating his commitment to his country. Following his military tenure, he contributed his talents to Verizon for 31 years, primarily serving in the bustling areas of Washington, D.C., and Maryland.

Throughout his life, Douglas remained an active member of various communities. He found camaraderie and purpose as a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Pythias in Maryland, where he forged lasting friendships and made meaningful contributions.

Douglas had a zest for life and a passion for adventure. He found immense joy in exploring the world's wonders alongside his beloved wife on numerous cruise adventures. An avid golfer from a young age, Douglas found solace and excitement on the greens, where he honed his skills and created cherished memories.

In his quieter moments, Douglas reveled in the timeless allure of old westerns and the soulful melodies of classic country music. His welcoming nature knew no bounds, as he never hesitated to strike up a conversation and make a new friend wherever he went.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 25 years, Sandy Lawson; sons, Christopher and wife Sherri of Kingsport, TN, and Douglas E. and wife Heidi of Fenton, Delaware; step-daughter, Michele Kuhn, and husband Jeff of Washington, D.C.; step-son, Michael Baker, and wife Elsa of Edgewater, Maryland; brother, Grant Lawson, and wife Dianne of Beulahville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Steph, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jonathan, Scott, and Audrey; as well as great-grandchildren, Arianna and Phoenix.

Douglas is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Gertrude Lawson; his sisters, Eula Fields, Beula Belcher, Elizabeth Roland, Billie Tester, Bea Lawson, and Loraine Willis; and his brother, Curtis Lawson.

A Celebration of Life honoring Douglas's remarkable journey will be scheduled at a later date, allowing friends and family to come together and pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Ballad Health Hospice House or The American Cancer Society, continuing Douglas's legacy of compassion and generosity in supporting others in need.
