Frances Mae (King) Hurd

Frances Mae (King) Hurd, 93, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025. She was born on February 1, 1932, in Whitmire, South Carolina to the late Charlie Francis King and Maggie Mae (Crocker) King. Frances graduated with honors from Whitmire High School in 1950 and was a valedictorian of her class. Frances married Hugh Jack Hurd and raised three children. Early in her career, Frances was a salesclerk and retail store manager. Subsequently, she dedicated 44 years of her life in the textile industry until 2000 when she retired from her position as an invoicer at Carlisle Finishing Division of Cone Mills in Carlisle, SC, before moving to Kingsport. During her working career, Frances built many lasting relationships and earned the respect of her co-workers.

Ms. Hurd was a member at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church and subsequently a member at New Life Christian Fellowship in Whitmire. Since moving to Kingsport, she attended Heritage First Church of God, Sunnyside Baptist Church and Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Frances served as a Sunday School teacher and Children's Choir Director at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church and New Life Christian Fellowship in Whitmire, SC. She was also Children's Choir Director Heritage at First Church of God in Kingsport. She frequently directed Easter, Christmas and Mother's Day programs over many years at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church. Ms. Hurd especially enjoyed spending time with her family, walking on the beach, and collecting seashells. She was a caring, supportive mother, who dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was an endearing hostess who always greeted you with a warm smile and a welcoming embrace. She was a quiet spirit, an avid reader, exceptionally intelligent, loved listening to music and was well loved by those who took time to know her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Charlie Francis King, Jr., her sister Brenda Ann (King) Bodie, her former husband, Hugh Jack Hurd, her mother-in-law, Rosa Ethel (Gilliam) Hurd, her sisters-in-law, Adaline (Hurd) Surrett and Edna (Horton) Hurd, and her bother-in-law, Walter Frank Hurd.

Surviving are her children: Mary Ethel (Hurd) Beuris and husband, Bobby of Kingsport; Charles Drendall Hurd and wife, Glenda of Kingsport; Francis Jackson (Jack) Hurd and wife, Karen of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Adrian Fortenberry and husband, Scott of Nashville; Rosanna Hildreth and husband Jesse of Winslow, Cheshire, UK; Megan Land and husband, Matt of Kingsport; Alan Beuris and wife, Stephanie; great-grandchildren: Lily Hildreth, Alex Hildreth, Carsten Land and Everleigh Land; nieces and nephews: Kenneth Bodie, and wife Heather, Clayton Bodie, Donna Harris and husband, James, Elaine Hyler, and her husband Robert and Janeen Toby and her husband Mark and several grand nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, December 1st at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport, TN. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ray Massey, Rev. William Yon, and Rev. Steve Tilley officiating. Music will be provided by Denise and Jeff McReynolds.

Graveside service and burial will be at 11:00 am on December 2nd at Oak Hill Memorial Park, Kingsport, TN. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 am.
