KINGSPORT - Gary Wayne Smith, 71, of Kingsport, TN, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 17, 2025. Gary was born and raised in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett in 1971. Following his graduation he began working for General Shale. After his time with General Shale, Gary spent 28 years with JP Stevens where he worked as a weaver. In the later portion of his career, he worked at Dobyns-Bennett High School and retired from the school system in 2023. In his spare time away from work, Gary loved spending time hunting and fishing. He will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Wanda Smith.

Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rebecca "Becky" Miner Smith; children, Bobby Smith and Amber Smith Cravens (Chris); grandchildren, Chelsea Smith and Justin Smith; special aunt, Lois Smith; and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Les Honeycutt officiating.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Walker's Fork Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
