GATE CITY, VA – Helen Newland "Mia" Henderson, 81, of the East Carters Valley Community, entered into rest on Sunday, October 4, 2025.
She was born in Kingsport, TN on December 19, 1943, a daughter of the late Harry Sandige Newland and Edith Leigh (Gooden) Newland. Helen graduated from ETSU with a Bachelor of Science degree where she was MAGNA cum laude. She retired as Director of the Head Start program from the Scott County School System after over 30 years of caring for the kids. She was a member of State Line Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Bill Henderson, her husband of 33 years and father of their sons, Bryan and Chris; great-granddaughter, NovaLeigh Faith Henderson; sister, Kathy Newland Simmons; brother, Jack Newland.
Surviving are her sons, Bryan Henderson and wife Penny and Chris Henderson and wife Susan; grandchildren, Matthew Henderson (Shayla), Lucas Henderson (Sarah), Jordann Walsh (Chase), Nicholas Henderson, Christopher Henderson, Benjamin Henderson, and Cameron Henderson; great-grandchildren, Brody, Hunter, Bryleigh, Levi, Lakynn Rose, Parker Kate, and Ridge; brother, Allen Newland and wife Carol; nephews, Mike Newland, Tim Newland, Kelly Williams, and Andy Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, October 11, 2025 at State Line Baptist Church, 310 W. Carters Valley Rd, Kingsport, TN. Services will be held at 1:15 pm with Rev. Scott Carter officiating. Music will be provided by Chris Henderson, Nick Henderson and Kelly Williams.
Interment will follow the service in Walnut Chapel Cemetery, East Carters Valley Rd, Gate City, VA.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Henderson, Lucas Henderson, Nicholas Henderson, Christopher Henderson, Benjamin Henderson, Cameron Henderson, Kelly Williams and Chase Walsh.
The family would like to encourage everyone planning to attend to wear comfortable casual attire.
