HENDERSONVILLE - Major Henry P. Applegate passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 8, 2023, at the age of 90.
He is survived by his wife Betty and son Bruce (wife Pamela), five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Henry Keith and his mother, father, two sisters and two brothers. He was born January 15, 1933, in Wise County, VA. He moved to Kingsport, TN at an early age and attended Sullivan County High School. In 1953 after graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corp and married Betty Strickler, his high school sweetheart. He served in Korea during the war. After fulfilling his enlistment in the Marine Corp., he joined the United States Army and became an officer. He served in Vietnam and retired October of 1972. He and his wife Betty chose to make Hendersonville, TN their home for the rest of their lives. He continued to serve his country at the community level with Betty for over half a century.
Visiting will take place Monday, August 14th from 5-8 pm. A military graveside service for family only will be Tuesday, August 15th at 2 pm at Memory Gardens in Hendersonville, TN.
