KINGSPORT - J.D. Gass, 89, of Kingsport passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Johnson City, TN.
J. D. was born June 4, 1935, in Greene County, TN to the late Henry R. Gass and Dessie Lane Gass.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Kingsport.
J.D. was a lifelong carpenter, and a lifetime member of the Kingsport Moose Lodge.
He enjoyed all sports and trips to Myrtle Beach.
In addition to his parents, J.D. was preceded in death by his brother, Cecil Gass; sisters, Helen Wise, Richard Hensley, and Nella Mae Canter; nephews, Richad Hensley, Leonard Hensley, and Robert Conley; and lifelong friend, Mabel Gilmore.
Those left to cherish J.D.'s memory are his nephews, Marcus Conley; and Morris Wyatt (Carolyn).
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm Friday, January 24, 2025, in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will follow with Minister Phip Sams officiating.
A Military Graveside Service will be conducted at 3:00 pm, Friday, January 24, 2025, at Oak Hill Memorial Park and will be under the direction of the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #275.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of James H. Quillen VA Medical Center ICU.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in J.D.'s memory to First Christian Church, 106 E Charlemont Ave, Kingsport, TN 37660.

I worked with JD the better part of 20 years. He taught me most of what I know to become the carpenter I am today. I will miss you my friend!

Sad to see the news of J.D.'s passing. He and my dad, James Lovelace,were friends for years. My dad's secretary, Dorothy Gilmore, introduced me to J.D. He was a man of few words but was always wearing a smile and had something funny to say. He built a sunroom on my house in Hiltons VA in the early 1990's. When we made our trip to Lowes to get supplies instead of showing his miliary card to get the veterans discount he would simply show the lady at the register his shiny shoes and say who else could shine a shoe like that except a veteran lol. After my dad passed away we would occasionally run into him at the mall or Walmart. He always made he smile!! He was a good man!! Mark S. Lovelace.
