James E. Carter June 2, 1935 - September 8, 2024
GATE CITY, VA - James E. Carter, age 89 of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 8, 2024 following a brief illness. James was born on June 2, 1935 to the late Charlie Carter and Nina Barnette Carter. He attended Alley Valley Baptist Church and Sloantown Community Church as long as his health permitted. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed farming and had a wonderful sense of humor. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 60 years, Lorene Ervin Carter; 2 brothers, Wayne Carter and David Carter; and 3 sisters, Betty Roberts, Marcelene Sloan and Nell Bowen.
James is survived by his son, Eddie Carter (Cindy); 2 grandchildren, Jamie McLain and Regina McGhee (Joshua); great-grandchildren, Carter McLain, James McLain, Matthew McLain, Lucas McLain, Waylon McGhee, Charlee McGhee, Rylee McGhee and Addison McGhee (expected in December); sisters, Thelma Rhoton, Paulette Rains and Brenda Gillenwater (Larry); along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, VA.
Graveside service will be held at 12 PM on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Carter Family Cemetery in Duffield, VA. Music will be provided by Norman Sloan. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11 AM.
Doug Edwards, Mike Edwards, Joshua McGhee, James McLain, Carter McLain, Rick Fansler, and Daryl Edwards will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Kevin McClain.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Brooke McNew Hall, Norman Sloan and Rita Fansler.
