James Sylvester Reed March 23, 1931- April 5, 2024 GATE CITY, VA - James Sylvester Reed, 93, went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2024.
He was born on March 23, 1931 in Kingsport, TN to the late Mary Dale (Mollie Sampson) and Carson Reed. James was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary, his brother, Charles Reed; sisters, Evelyn McDavid and Helen Starnes.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Jewel Swanson (husband John) of Charleston, SC, Darren Reed (wife Amy) of Gate City, VA, Delonda Spivey (husband Kelly) of Gate City, VA, Sonya Randall (husband Duane) of Newport News, VA and their 1 great-grandson, Derek Kim Reed and his 7 children and his 14 grandchildren and his 3 great-grandchildren; grandchildren Austin Reed (wife Kinsey) of Gate City, VA, Hannah Herron (husband Caleb) of Church Hill, TN, Haley Duncan (husband Connor) of Kingsport, TN, Hope Spivey of Gate City, VA, Sinjin Swanson of Charleston, SC, Meagan Eppard (husband Matthew) and their 5 kids, Chelsea Gaita (husband Josh) and their 3 kids, Tahlia Randall and her 1 child, Dakotah Thornton (husband Richard) their 1 child; great-grandchildren Addilyn Linton, Boone Duncan, Cooper Herron and Lyndee Reed; brothers, Raymond Reed and Ralph Reed of Gate city, VA, Carl Reed of Weber City, VA, Larry Reed of Knoxville, TN, and Billy Reed of San Francisco, CA; special in-laws, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 12 pm to 1 pm on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, VA. Military graveside services will follow at Austin/Bledsoe Cemetery, 696 Dr. Andrew Jackson Osborne Hwy, Blackwater, VA with Jeff DeBoard officiating. American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 will provide the military honors.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
