KINGSPORT - Johnny Mack Butler, Sr., 86 of Kingsport, TN, died Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Johnny graduated from Rock Hill High School, Rock Hill, SC and received a BS and master's degrees from Clemson University. He was a distinguished military graduate. He served in the US Army in Germany and Vietnam. During his tour in Vietnam, he was an artillery forward observer, logging over 800 hours in helicopters. He received two Army Air Commendations and upon discharge, he was awarded a Bronze Star. Johnny retired from TN Eastman after 32 years of service. He worked in fiber development, starting in carpet, new products and textiles for the home and filters for cigarettes. His assignments took him all over The Far East. His last years were spent traveling to China several times a year.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Raymond Butler; grandson, Harrison David Butler; siblings, Carlton, Ray and Gail.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Kathie Robbins; three sons, Johnny Mack, Jr. (Tammy) Butler of Leesville, LA, David Butler (Nancy Yeager, fiancée) of Ashville, NC and Bruce (Angie) Butler of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Victoria, David Burch, Elisabeth, Meg, Zoe and Ian; sisters, Sylvia (Marion) Munn and Barbara (Will) Mallinax; sister-in-law, Cynthia Butler; brother-in-law, Al (Ellen) Robbins; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 11:00am- 12:00pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Brad Hyde officiating.

I worked with John at Eastman for over 30 years. We shared an office together for years and traveled all over the world together. He was a great friend that I will always remember.
