Joseph Dye Obituary

Fire Chief Joseph Craig Dye

April 17, 2025

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of retired Fire Chief Joseph Craig Dye, 67, who departed this life and entered into the arms of Jesus on April 17, 2025, at 3:33 PM, surrounded by loved ones.

A native of Kingsport, Tennessee, Craig dedicated his life to family, service, and protecting his community. His 34 year career in fire service was marked by courage, grace, and a firm commitment to the safety of others. Rising through the ranks to become Fire Chief, Craig was not only a leader but a mentor and friend to many. His time at the department was so special to him, and his role as Chief made him immensely proud. In addition to his career in the fire department, Craig also volunteered for many years with the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew and the 911 board. He was always ready to take action whenever and wherever he was needed.

Beyond his distinguished service, Craig was first and foremost a family man. He was the beloved husband of Rhenda Dye, with whom he shared decades of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. He was a proud father to his daughters, Ivy and Sophie, and nothing brought him more joy than being with his girls. Craig was also a doting grandfather to his cherished grandsons and nephew, whose lives he lit up with stories, hugs, and endless encouragement. His love for his family was his greatest source of pride and purpose.

Craig faced his final years with the same strength that defined his life, bravely battling Early Onset Alzheimer's disease. Even in the face of such a difficult illness, his faith in God was a constant source of strength for him. He lived with integrity, kindness, and a servant's heart, always striving to reflect God's love in both his work and his relationships.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, J.C. and Dorothy Dye, whose guidance and example helped shape the man he became.

Craig's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the department he helped shape, and the community he so selflessly served.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Rhenda, daughters, Ivy Musick and husband Tal, Sophie Johnson, and husband Gavin; grandsons, Creed, Dayne, and Colton Musick, and Grey Johnson; brother Brad; mother-in-law, Nina Collins, brother and sister-in-law, Brett and Mindy Collins; special nephew, Caden Collins; nieces, Ariel and Haley; along with his Kingsport Fire Department Brotherhood.

The family will receive friends from 12pm to 2pm on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at Carter-Trent Funeral home in Kingsport. A funeral service will follow with Dr. Kenneth Calvert officiating.

An entombment service will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Kingsport Fire Department Chaplain Barry Carr officiating.

Members of the Kingsport Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tennessee Alzheimer's Association.

Being a senior classmate of 1976 I remember Craig like it was yesterday walking the halls of DB...quiet, strong, kind, well liked and friendly . If I recall correctly I saw Craig at a Keith Urban concert. We shook hands, spoke quickly and on our way. RIP Craig.... Jimmy Hudson

Craig Dye was a friend and neighbor in Sevier Terrace. Quiet, strong and loyal are words that come to mind when I remember Craig. To know that he served his community in a steadfast manner is not surprising, but it is reflective of his character and integrity. Kingsport lost another favorite son. Thoughts are with Craig´s family and friends.
