Marshall Hembery Obituary

Marshall James "Jim" Hembery
September 5, 2025
Marshall James "Jim" Hemberry, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, community leader, and friend, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 5, 2025, after a brief battle with pancreatitis. He was 74 years old.
Jim was born in Wenatchee, Washington, in 1950 and grew up in Cashmere and Peshastin. After graduating from high school, he faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force from 1973–1978. It was during his service that he met the love of his life, Nanette Doherty. The two married in 1973, beginning a marriage of 52 years filled with devotion, faith, and joy.
Jim and Nanette made their home in Quincy in 1978, where Jim quickly became a fixture of the community. He worked for GTE, which later became Verizon, until his retirement in 2009. Alongside his career, Jim poured his life into his family and community, serving as a Cub Scout pack leader, coaching Little League baseball, and coaching youth basketball. He was a man of steady encouragement who loved to see young people grow and thrive.
Jim also gave decades of leadership to his city. He served on the Quincy City Council from 1992–1995 and 2001–2007, before being elected mayor in 2007. For ten years, until 2017, he faithfully led the city during a time of tremendous change. Under his leadership, Quincy evolved into a hub where "agriculture meets technology," attracting five major tech companies-including Microsoft and Yahoo!-that brought data centers and greatly expanded the local tax base. This growth funded major civic improvements, including a new library, fire station, and plans for a new police station and city hall.
Mayor Hemberry also championed public safety and community trust. He helped secure cutting-edge crime-detecting technology such as Washington's first ShotSpotter system, invested in infrastructure, and worked with police to build stronger relationships with the city's rapidly growing Hispanic community through
bilingual town halls and outreach. Known for his accessibility and his heart for people, Jim embodied servant leadership in every sphere of life.
Beyond his work, Jim was a man of deep faith and many passions. He loved fishing, cheering on the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks, and watching Gonzaga basketball. More than anything, he loved his family. His greatest joy was being a husband, dad, and "grandpa" to his growing family, and he was most content when surrounded by those he loved.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nanette; their children, Greg Hemberry, Scott and Nikki Hemberry, and Chris and Kaydi Hemberry; and their grandchildren, Bradley Hemberry, Joey and Marissa Hamlik (and their children Juliette and Brooks), Matt and Regan Schwartz (and their children Warren and Madelyn), Josh and Alicia Bate (and their son Harry), Blake and Nataleigh Beltran, Jadyn Hemberry, Logan and Halle Dellis, and Lauren Hemberry. He is also survived by his sister, Judy (Gary) Grams and his brothers, Ron (Kathi) Hemberry and Ken (Liz) Hemberry. He was preceded in moving to heaven by his parents, Don and Kathryn Hemberry.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of steady leadership, kindness, and generosity. He served his family with devotion, his community with vision, and his friends with loyalty. His life was marked by a commitment to making Quincy and the lives of those around him better, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
