Kenneth Rich Obituary

Kenneth Darrell Rich

KINGSPORT - Kenneth Darrell Rich, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering faith. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee, Darrell made this community his lifelong home and the place where he built a rich and meaningful life.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, John and Georgia Berniece Rich; and his precious grandson, Griffin Rich.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Jill Rich, who was the love of his life and his greatest companion. He also leaves behind two sons whom he adored and proudly supported, Garrett Rich (Candace) and Alex Rich (Britteny). His memory lives on in his treasured grandchildren - Emory and Emma Ellis, JT and Annie Rich, and Hayes Rich - each of whom brought him endless joy and pride. Darrell also leaves behind a sister, Lisa Bockholt; brother, Jim Taylor (Gayle); brother-in-law, Joe Riggs (Becky); and two nephews, Darren Riggs (McKayla) and Ben Riggs (Summer), who he cared for deeply.

A graduate of Lynn View High School, Darrell was active in school athletics and enjoyed playing a variety of sports during his time there. His passion for competition and teamwork would stay with him throughout his life, especially in his later years when he found joy in calling baseball, softball, and basketball games for the local community.

For 32 years, Darrell served with dedication at Eastman Chemical Company, where he formed lifelong friendships and left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. In retirement, he found continued joy and connection through his time with the LSE group, cherishing the bonds formed during those years.

When he wasn't behind the mitt or spending time with family, you could find him on the family farm - mowing the land, putting up hay, and taking pride in every job, no matter how big or small. The simplicity of the farm brought him peace, and the work gave him purpose.

But above all, Darrell's greatest fulfillment came from his time with family. He was a constant source of strength, encouragement, and laughter to his wife, children, and grandchildren. Whether gathered around the dinner table or out on the field, his presence was steady and full of love.

As we reflect on Darrell's life, we find comfort in these words:

"One of the hardest truths to accept is that sometimes a person's time on Earth is simply finished. Not because they were too old. Not because they had nothing left to give. But because the purpose God had for their life was fulfilled. Every life has a purpose. Even the shortest life. Even the life that feels like it ended too soon."

Darrell's purpose was fulfilled in the way he loved, served, encouraged, and lived. He will be missed beyond measure, but his legacy will continue through the family and friends who were so deeply touched by his life.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. Randall Frye and The Rev. Dr. Carole Martin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660 and Shades of Grace United Methodist Church, 313 E. Sullivan St., Kingsport, TN 37660.

Yesterday

Darrell will be missed! His faith and family were his passion. That was obvious from the first time you had a conversation with Darrell. Darrell gifted me a book when his boys played basketball for me at Sevier "The Purpose Driven Life" I still read this every other year and think of Darrell, what a fine man!
Would love to attend services but am out of town.
Condolences to to the Rich family!
God Bless,
