Landon Kenny Obituary

Landon Kenny

January 2, 1942 -

March 31, 2025

Landon Nelson Kenny, 83, formerly of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Landon was born in Bristol, Virginia to Ross and Margaret Kenny. His family then moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, where he was a long time resident. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School, and then went on to receive both a BS and MS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Landon built an impressive four decade career at Tennessee Eastman Company, where he started as a co-op student in 1966. He joined as a full time chemical engineer soon after graduating and distinguished himself as both a technical pioneer and leader of people. He was especially proud of his work on the landmark coal gasification project, which was the first commercial coal gasification facility in the United States. Later, he served as Director of Engineering Technology, head of Acid Division and head of Plant Maintenance, before retiring in 2000. Throughout his career, Landon was committed to product quality, employee safety and leading through example.

Landon was a true people person who loved hearing and sharing a good story. He also enjoyed breaking bread with friends and family, with breakfast being his favorite meal of all. He was a member of Kingsport Kiwanis Club, Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Chi Sigma.

Landon is survived by wife of 56 years, Peggy; his sons David Kenny (Cindy) and Greg Kenny(Tricia); three grandchildren; his brother William, his sister Suzanne, his sister Janice, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon Ross and Margaret Elizabeth Kenny.

The family will honor his memory privately at a later date.

Hello Peggy,
I was saddened to read of Landon's passing in the Tau Beta Phi magazine. Landon and I were engineering co-op classmates at UTK and for a couple of years when we were in the MSChE stage of our time in Knoxville we were roommates in University housing apartments. Although neither of us knew where life would take us at that stage, it was obvious that Landon had a skill set that would take him far in life, and after reading his obit it is confirmed that he made the most of his talents to improve his station in life and make the world a better place for many others as well.
One of the nicest things that I read in his obit was that he was savvy enough to retire in 2000 while he still had many good years to enjoy life with his friends and family before passing on.
Best wishes to you and your extended family.

I would like to express my appreciation to those who remembered Landon with a living tree. Landon and I frequently enjoyed nature more than our golf game. We loved seeing the water birds and other animals. Often we commented on a particularly beautifully shaped tree and blossoms. The family appreciates this living tribute. Thank you.

He was my boss then my friend for a couple of decades. I cared for him and to his family I would like to say, may you hear from on High, echos of mercy and whispers of love. The obit was right on the mark. The last time I talked to him he reminded me that WE did a lot of good things at Eastman.

Peggy: Barbara and I were saddened to hear of Landon´s passing. Just one story of his leadership: Some years ago when I was a UT Trustee, Dr. Roger Brown, Chancellor of UT Chattanooga, told me that as a high school grad and employee at Eastman, Landon advised him to go to college and get a degree. Roger followed his advice, got a doctorate and a career as an educator.

Landon will be missed by many.

Affectionately known as "Mr. Kenny" to those who worked with and for him, Landon was a great boss, mentor and friend. He always had time for a chat, was fiercely loyal, made us all better, and genuinely cared about his people. He was a fixture on our annual golf trips where his score didn´t always reflect the joy he brought to us. My favorite Landon memory is joining him for breakfast at the Bagel Shop, sharing a great story, and leaving him to finish The NY Times crossword puzzle. Rest in Peace.
