Leonard Hood Obituary

Leonard Hood May 7, 1944 - August 2, 2024

GALLATIN - Leonard "Baxter" Hood, age 80, died Friday, August 2, 2024 with family by his side.

Baxter was born on May 7, 1944 and married his wife, Margaret, on August 25, 1962. The couple resided in Colonial Heights for 54 years, where Baxter devoted his life to bettering his community.

Baxter is survived by his brothers, Dwayne and John Hood and sister, Reba Hood. He is also survived by his daughters, Sheila Miller (husband, Eric) and Yvelle Mull (husband, Jeff). He was a great "Papa" to his grandchildren: Andru Miller (wife, Stephanie), Jotham Miller (wife, Katie), Lorisa Morán (husband, Pedro), Garin Mull (wife, Jenny), Griffin Mull, and Mallory Anderson (husband, Brandon). He also enjoyed the fun brought by his great-grandchildren: Aubrey Miller, Lorelai Mull, Emilia Morán, Luka Morán, and Silas Mull.

He spent his career as a senior technician at Eastman Chemical Company, but kept himself busy with many other ventures as well. He worked with the state's Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program, served as a ministry leader at Kingsport First Church of the Nazarene (now Southview Community Church) and Holy Mountain Baptist Church, and was a productive member of The Gideons International. He served his community as a county commissioner and was the founder of Kingsport's "Liberty Celebration".

He will be remembered for the countless ways he devoted his life to others. His love for country, neighbor, and family was an inspiration.

A memorial service will be held at Colonial Heights Christian Church on August 18th at 2pm.

Hal and I were so sorry to hear of Mr Hoods passing. We remember he and Margaret from CHCC. They were among the first people to make us feel so welcome when we joined the church. We´ll be praying for your family during this hard time. Hal and Pat Gibson

I got to know Baxter when we were in Toastmasters together. He gave some really entertaining speeches, but he also practiced some serious ones. When he was preparing to speak in the real world about something important, he would practice with us first to make sure he would do it well. Baxter was always visualizing how things could be better, and working quietly behind the scenes to make it happen. I'm confident his influence will live on, in the lives he touched.

Baxter was a blessing to me for many years.
He was always upbeat and positive and humming or singing a hymn or talking about the Lord.
Enjoyed carpooling to Eastman with him for several years. And then seeing him for many years on his morning walk picking up trash along Lebanon Road.
He was a true servant of the Lord and the community.

My 1st memory of Baxter was of the Liberty Celebration. I was a little scared and uncomfortable around so many people who already knew the music and each other. Baxter befriended me and treated me very kindly. He must have been a wonderful daddy to his children, as he had the rare gift to make everyone feel important and like they mattered. He will be greatly missed among many people. Prayers for his family.
