Peggy Kenny Obituary

Peggy Kenny

October 11, 1943 -

July 20, 2025

Peggy Ann Tranbarger Kenny, 81, formerly of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of joy, resilience, and community service.

Born in Kingsport, Tennessee, Peggy was the daughter of A.J. "Doc" Tranbarger and Sara Cathryn McCoy Tranbarger. Peggy graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School, and later earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from East Tennessee State University, where she was recognized by The Wall Street Journal with an academic achievement award. Peggy had a sharp, inquisitive mind and was a lifelong learner who cultivated the same curiosity and love of discovery in others.

A natural performer, Peggy played her roles in life with passion and purpose. Wife, mother, realtor, storyteller, golfer, traveler, actor, chef, hostess, bridge player, caregiver, and drama instructor are just a few of the many roles she played and she played them with flair and distinction. A breast cancer survivor, Peggy's dedication to helping other cancer survivors earned her a St. George Distinguished Service Medal from The American Cancer Society and a Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. She also served as a counselor at Camp Horizon, a camp for children battling cancer, and was very active in Kingsport community theater.

Those who knew Peggy will remember her vibrant spirit, her creative energy, and her unique and frequently outlandish sense of humor. She had a special gift for making people laugh and feel included. Peggy found joy in exploring new places, hobbies, and ideas. She found equal joy in gathering with family and friends, from beach vacations with her children and grandchildren to golf outings with her "birdie buddies." She could be both a candle and a firecracker depending on the occasion, always lighting up the room.

Peggy was a loving and faithful companion to her husband of 56 years, Landon Kenny, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, David Kenny (Cindy) and Greg Kenny (Tricia); grandchildren, Bryson, Seth (Sophie) and Casey; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and many treasured friends.

The family will announce arrangements for a celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org.

Earlier today

To Peggy´s family, I am so sorry to hear about your sweet mother. I´ve known your mother for such a long time. Back many years ago we were in Altrusa together. She was a fine lady, always a hard worker in whatever she took on. Also, knew your Dad. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. They were both just the best. I know you will miss them dearly. God Bless you during this difficult time. Keeping you all in our prayers.
