KINGSPORT - Robert Eugene Shelton died on the 17th of May at the age 94.
He resided in Kingsport with his wife of 67 years, Carol MacGregor Shelton. He is survived by his wife and son, Mark R. Shelton of Kingsport.
He was born August 17, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of the late Turley C. and Genevieve (Tomlinson) Shelton. He was preceded in death by his brother, T. Charles Shelton Jr.
He served in the U.S. Army from January 1951 to November 1953 spending thirteen months in Korea with the Army Security Agency as a high-speed radio operator. He then attended Wayne State University, Detroit, MI where he met his wife and graduated in January 1957 with a degree in accounting. He went to work with Touche, Ross, Bailey and Smart, a national C.P.A. firm, and earned his Michigan CPA Certificate in 1959.
In October 1962 he accepted a position with Federated Publications, Inc., a small newspaper chain headquartered in Battle Creek, MI. He worked there for a year as the Central Office Auditor before accepting a transfer to their Chronicle-Tribune newspaper in Marion, IN as Business Manager.
In 1965 he joined Kiwanis International. He served his club as Secretary and then President and his region as a Lt. Governor in the State of Indiana (1972). While there, he received the "Distinguished Service Award." He was also active in Junior Achievement.
Bob sat on the board and then later served as secretary of the Marion Easter Pageant, a community endeavor. He was a participant in the pageant for nine years. He started out as a wine merchant and ended up playing Disciple John. He was also involved with the United Way, serving as a division chairman, board member and treasurer.
At Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Marion, IN, he served three years as a Deacon and three years as an elder.
While he was in Marion, the newspaper chain was acquired by Gannett Co., Inc. He remained there until November 1974 when he was transferred to the Today newspaper in Cocoa, FL as Assistant Treasurer and Controller.
In 1975, Bob joined the Cocoa, FL Kiwanis Club where he served as the Club Secretary/Treasurer and as a Board Member. While there, his Club named him "Kiwanian of the Year."
He served as a trustee for three years at Riverside United Presbyterian Church in Cocoa Beach, FL.
In 1986 he was transferred again--this time to the Norwich Bulletin in Norwich, CT as the Controller. He retired from there in March 1990.
While a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Groton, CT, he was on the finance committee, audited the church's financial record, served on the worship committee and was in charge of the ushers for three years.
In 1992, he moved to Kingsport, TN to be near his son who was working at Eastman. Since moving, he has been active in Colonial Heights United Methodist Church as treasurer, auditor, usher and treasurer of the Men's Association and in the Kingsport District as Treasurer for 10+ years. He was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class, and the Upper Crust Choir. He became the Chairman of the church's Good Samaritan Fund in 2015. They offer financial help to those in need.
He was active in the Colonial Heights Meals on Wheels delivering meals, served on the Board of Directors and was the treasurer for a number of years.
In the spring of 2003, he organized the Mountain Empire Chapter #289 (TN/VA) of the Korean War Veterans Association. He served as its first Commander for four years and later as Quartermaster. He also represented the Chapter at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center Veterans Service Organization meetings.
In 2005 he received his Life Membership in Zion Lodge #1, F. & A.M. in Detroit, MI.
He was a life member of the VFW and served two years as a Trustee and three years on the House Committee of the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382, Inc. He also was a member of the American Legion.
A memorial service will be held at Colonial Heights United Methodist church on Saturday, May 24, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Chris Brown officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, May 29, at 11:00 am at East Lawn Memorial Park, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion.
