Shirley Jean Copas

February 9, 2025

Shirley Jean Copas, 89, of Kingsport, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2025, in Hilton Head, S.C., surrounded by her loving family.

She was born October 8, 1935, in Kingsport, to the late Harvey and Carrie Casteel Slaughter.

Shirley was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who enjoyed spending quality time with her family.

She enjoyed singing, gardening, flowers, cooking, and was especially fond of her "fur baby" Gigi.

In her earlier years, she worked at Nettie Lee in Kingsport.

She was a member of Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Copas; siblings, Ann King, Betty Jordan, Jackie Phillips, Lowell Slaughter, George Slaughter, and Harvey Slaughter, Jr.

Those left to cherish Shirley's memory are her children, Dr. Mark Copas (Rhonda), Teresa Hilbert (Marty), and Heather Young (Kevin), grandchildren, Corbin Young, Courtney Young, Colton Young, Celsea Copas, and Caleb Copas; sister, Dottie Bacon; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends Sunday, February 16, 2025, 1:30-3:00 pm at Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 3:00 pm with Pastor George Winegar officiating.

Graveside Service will follow at Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
