Shirley Jane Jacks, of
Anderson, SC, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026. She was born on January 11, 1936, to John and Alma Revan in Holly Springs, SC. She lived a life defined by intellect, discipline, faith, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. She was a scholar, educator, and lifelong learner who believed deeply in doing things well, thinking carefully, and continuing to grow at every stage of life.
Shirley enjoyed a long and joyful marriage to her beloved husband, Richard Jacks, who preceded her in death in June, 2013. Together, they built a life rooted in education, faith, curiosity, and shared experience. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Betty Cook, and her brother, W. L. Revan. She is survived by daughters, Laura (Gene) Ruffin and Nancy (David) Mansfield, along with nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family, and many others she loved deeply and considered family. Her relationships were marked by consistency, loyalty, and a strong sense of responsibility to the people in her life.
The family extends special appreciation to Shirley's cherished and fiercely faithful friends known as the "Lunch Bunch." Being with these women brought Shirley joy beyond measure. They walked beside her with loyalty, love, humor, and unwavering presence. Even as her health and intellect waned, they never abandoned her, and their steadfast support has meant more than words can express to Shirley and to her daughters, who remain profoundly grateful.
Shirley's academic journey reflected both breadth and rigor. She completed her undergraduate studies at Carson Newman, attended Mars Hill College, and completed her Masters Degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later earned her Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Georgia. Her education shaped a career grounded in disciplined scholarship, high standards, and thoughtful inquiry. Her professional life was closely tied to Anderson University, where she served for more than 50 years, teaching French and serving as Department Head of Languages. Her influence extended well beyond the classroom, grounded in high expectations, careful preparation, and a deep respect for language and culture. In recognition of her commitment to academic excellence, the Dr. Shirley Jacks Award was established to honor student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. The award is presented annually during halftime of an Anderson University basketball game, a setting Shirley loved. She was a devoted fan of all college sports and could reliably be found in her regular seat for both women's and men's basketball games at AU.
Faith was a steady and enduring part of Shirley's life. She was an active member of Boulevard Baptist Church, serving in Sunday School and on numerous committees over the years. Shirley believed in showing up and giving her time where it mattered. In addition to her commitment to Boulevard, she supported organizations such as The Haven of Rest, Meals on Wheels, Family Promise, and other local charities not only through financial contributions, but through hands-on service and consistent involvement.
An avid reader and lifelong learner, Shirley also loved to travel. She and Richard traveled internationally extensively with friends, family, and students for many years. Shirley frequently served as the leader of these trips, a role well suited to her multilingual skills, exceptional ability to manage complex details, and genuine interest in history and culture.
Shirley will be remembered for her intellect, her discipline, her commitment to excellence, and the impact she had on students, colleagues, family, and friends. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she influenced and in an award that will continue to highlight what she believed in most: that excellence in academics and character are achievements to be celebrated.
