Shizuko Asbury Obituary

KINGSPORT - Shizuko (Lucille) Asbury, 96, of Kingsport, entered into Heaven on February 4, 2024.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend.

Shizuko was born in Osaka, Japan and embarked on her journey to the United States in 1953.

She built a life that was filled with love, faith, and happy memories. Her time in the United States surpassed the years she spent in her homeland, yet her heart never ceased to remember her old life in Japan.

In 1952, Shizuko met and fell in love with an American soldier, Paul Asbury Sr., who was stationed in Japan. They were married in Japan and moved to Harlan, Kentucky in 1953.

During her passage to America, Shizuko received her first Bible from a Navy chaplain. That Bible remained a cherished possession throughout her life, a symbol of her enduring faith.

Shizuko moved to Gate City, VA in 1959. She joined an international Bible study group and developed a personal relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Shizuko was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul Asbury, Sr.

She is survived by one son, Paul Asbury, Jr. (Janet) and one daughter, Alice Fritz (Dennis).; grandchildren, Audra Light (Dustin), Annie Henry (Heath), Alexandra Arwood (Austin), and Olivia Asbury; great-grandchildren, Easton and Hudson Light, Josie, Camryn, and Ella Henry, and (on the way) Sadie Arwood. Shizuko Asbury's life was a testament to the power of faith and resilience.

She will be remembered for her sweet smile, unwavering devotion to God, and the love she shared with her family and friends. Shizuko will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

At Shizuko's request, no formal memorial services will be held.

Mrs. Asbury will be laid to rest beside her husband, Paul, at Holston View Cemetery following a Private Family Graveside Service.

Please join us in remembering and honoring her legacy.

The care of Shizuko (Lucille) Asbury and her family has been entrusted to the staff of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.

Dear Alice and family, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I remember seeing you at Target a few years ago, and your mother was with you but shopping the store on her own. We talked then of her ability to be independent at her age. The memories will sustain you and your family. Take care. Janice Frazier
