Thomas Carter Obituary

June 8, 1958 – January 20, 2024

KINGSPORT - On Saturday, January 20, 2024, Thomas William Carter entered the gates of heaven while surrounded by his loving family. Thomas valiantly battled cancer for over two years. He is now fully and completely healed.

Thomas was born in Kingsport to George and Ruth (Broadwater) Carter on June 8, 1958. He spent his first seven years in Gate City before his family moved to Kingsport. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1976.

Thomas spent time at both the University of Tennessee and Ferrum Junior College. He entered the liquor business soon thereafter and never looked back. After a successful career with Knoxville distributor Beverage Control, he purchased B&B Package Store in 1991. He turned B&B into a national leader in bourbon selection, even having purchased the first commercial barrel from Buffalo Trace Distillery. Though the rows of dozens of boxes made maneuvering difficult, customers came from near and far to witness firsthand the famous B&B. He proudly owned B&B until June of 2023 when his illness forced the sale of the store. Though he could be found at B&B six days each week, he loved to tell folks that he never worked a day over those 32 years.

Thomas was always quick to assist those who needed it. In his final months, he embraced Children Exceeding Expectations, a free school for children with cancer and immune deficiency disorders.

Thomas was predeceased by his mother and father. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Robin, sons Brandon (Caitlin) of Savannah, Georgia; and Tyler of Norfolk, Virginia, grandsons Thomas Jackson and Henry Lee (due March 2024), brother George (Terri), and many beloved sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive visitors at Kingsport Community Church on Saturday, January 27, from 1:00 to 3:00. A funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor Mark Stayton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Thomas to Children Exceeding Expectations (checks may be mailed to 156 Vines Drive, Jonesborough, TN 37659) and the Bristol Hospice House. The family would like to thank the physicians and caregivers who assisted Thomas, especially Dr. Alexander Langerman of Vanderbilt University.

Dear Robin, Tyler and Brandon, I am truly sorry for your loss.
Thomas's body is being laid to rest today, but his spirit and soul is already in heaven. But we can smile and rejoice knowing his life lives on in our hearts & mind.
Thomas was one of those guys who you were glad to know and took pride in calling him a treasured friend. I will always remember all the fun shenanigans we got into. Every time we got together I never laughed so much.
Today I weep knowing that we will never have those opportunities again. But I will smile and give out a chuckle knowing that I had the pleasure of all the fun times we enjoyed. So I raise my class to the heavens and say, "to Thomas Carter, thank you for your friendship and for caring so much for your family and all those who you helped".

So sorry to hear about losing Thomas. I met and worked with Thomas at Beverage Control back in the day. What a guy! We were instant friends and I´m so happy I was able to know someone like Thomas in my lifetime and call him my friend . Thomas had a positive approach to life and was always willing to help anyone that needed it. His dry humor and wit were a Thomas trademark! The world could use more Thomas Carters...especially in these times. Rest in peace my friend

Robin, as you read through these messages, you realize the impact Thomas had on people, a gift. My most memorable time is not the last 50 years of memories, but the hours he and I spent together laughing at those memories when I stopped in to see him over the last several months. I will always cherish that time. God Bless. As Drew noted, Ruth has a bowl of soup beans, dog bread, and chow-chow waiting for him.

Dear Thomas' family,
Thomas was so dear to those of us who traveled as far away as Roanoke to Wytheville and on down to Kingsport.
I had been coming down to B&B for about 10 years, mostly once a month until the last couple of years.
Thomas taught me a lot about bourbon.
He was always so cheerful and helpful to us.
So many time I told people that when I came down it was like visiting with family who I had not seen in a while. During that time it was Thomas, Charlie and Rita.
It was my privilege to have known him during this period of time.
I hope that the good time out weigh the terrible times recently and I know that the good wishes will be lots during this period of time.
You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked for Triple "C" Distributing when I first delivered to B&B. Thomas and I were close from the first day. He was so friendly and made me feel like I was a part of his family. I delivered there for almost 20 years, the last 2 with Knox Beverage. I always looked forward to seeing and talking to him. He was a 1 owner with low milage, 1 of a kind. This world would be a much better place with more people like him. Thanks for all the memories I have of Thomas.

Traveling through Kingsport with the Navy and I stopped in at B&B per a recommendation from a friend. I met Thomas and we became friends instantly. He always referred to me as Lieutenant. After that I would stop in on my travels through and enjoy a wonderful conversation with Thomas and everyone that worked there. Never met a better person than Thomas. Heaven has received an angel for sure. He will be missed greatly! Prayers for his wife, family an friends.

Prayers,

Thomas was always so kind and witty. I loved going to the store, weaving cautiously through the aisles, and letting Thomas hand pick the perfect wine or spirit.
Years ago, I went to Thomas with an odd request. I needed two large corks for a set of antique salt & pepper shakers. I showed Thomas the shakers and he said, "Come with me." He opened a drawer in his office full of corks. We tried a a couple dozen while joking about family and children, then found two perfect fits. Thomas was surprised at my elation but I´d ordered 3 sets of corks over the years and none had fit - this was like hitting the jackpot. It was an everyday encounter but I think of Thomas every time I use my little pig salt & pepper shakers corked with fine bourbon stoppers. Rest in peace, Thomas. You are loved and admired.

I have wonderful memories of conversations with Thomas on the subject of wine and of course Bourbon. It was exciting to speak with a professional on the subject. He gave me valuable insights into new winemakers I had not experienced before with his recommendations. I'm a proud owner of his last Carter Family blend.
I may not have known him as long as his many friends however the moments spent with Robin and Thomas were priceless. I will miss him and his great knowledge.

I will always remember Thomas helping me out of a silly situation. At Caitlin and Brandon´s wedding reception, I was dancing with the little kids and managed to fall on my backside! Between the tight formal dress, my embarrassment, and being over 60, I was having a hard time getting back up. Thomas was there instantly, giving me a gentlemanly hand.
We´ve always thought so much of Thomas and are so appreciative of how he welcomed Caitlin into the Carter family and loved sweet Jackson. He will be missed.
