Woodrow "Woody" Reeves, Jr. July 9, 1957 - August 26, 2024

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Reeves, Jr. passed away August 26th after a 2+ year battle with ampullary adenocarcinoma.

He was born in Franklin, NC to the late Woodrow Wilson Reeves and Edythe Rebecca Taylor Reeves. Left to remember cringing at his dad jokes are his amazing wife, Lisa Shockley; his two great sons, Sean Reeves of Cincinnati, OH and Kyle Reeves (Laura Valentine) of New York, NY; his big sister and confidant, Rebecca Reeves of Conover, NC; and his beloved dog Zoey. He also had an amazing group of friends who remained in close contact during his illness, providing tremendous support from Franklin, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and, of course, Kingsport.

A proud graduate of Franklin High School, Woody attended Duke University and graduated with an AB Magna Cum Laude with departmental distinction in economics. He then received his MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed his urology residency at the University of Kentucky. He liked to joke about only going to blue and white basketball schools. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Urology.

Woody moved to Kingsport, TN in 1988 and practiced at Kingsport Urology Group, PC, in the same office for 31 years. He loved practicing urology and was passionate about trying to take the best possible care of "his" patients. As an active member of the medical community, he served as chairman of the Department of Surgery at Holston Valley Hospital for a number of years, was president of the Holston Valley Medical staff for two years and spent time on the executive committees of both Kingsport hospitals. Woody strongly believed it was the responsibility of physicians to try to improve care by representation and invested a significant amount of time in these activities. In retrospect, he wished he had that wasted time back, given what Ballad Heath has done to our local healthcare. Still, he tried.

Woody also grew to love Kingsport and was active in his local community. He participated in youth athletics with Kingsport Parks And Recreation on committees and as a coach for many of his sons' teams. As a member of the board of the Kingsport Boys and Girls Club, he helped start the initial Porsche raffle and was proud of the funds it raised for the local organization while fueling his love for cars. He more recently served on the Bays Mountain Commission and was integral to the building of the new Moonshiner's Delight trail, the conception and completion of which was his proudest local accomplishment.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3pm on Friday, October 25th at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home with visitation from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Woody Reeves New Trail Fund of the Bays Mountain Park Association to help with the building of the next great trail.
