Arthur Boyd Obituary

Arthur passed from this life into eternal life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 19, 2024. Arthur was born on June 11, 1947, in Kingsport, TN to the late John Franklin Boyd and Martha Fay Cox Boyd. His early education was in Kingsport and later in Blountville, TN. He graduated from Blountville high school in 1965 where he played football, being the first team on their newly renewed football program. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1968 with a BS Degree in Molecular Biology. He was a brother in Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Dr. Boyd received his MD degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School (University Center for Health Sciences) in Memphis, TN in 1972. While there he was a brother of Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity. His internship and residency which included general surgery was completed in 1974 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Once completed he began his medical practice in Sardis, a small town in North Mississippi. He was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice in 1977. At this time, he returned to his hometown of Kingsport where he practiced family medicine until retirement in 2017. During his time as a physician in Kingsport he practiced at Holston Medical Group from 1977 until 1985, and at Kingsport Family Practice Associates which was later renamed Park Drive Family Practice Associates and then expanded and renamed Mountain Region Family Medicine from 1985 until his retirement in 2017.

At Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital Dr. Boyd was involved with several committees and organizations. From 1984 until 1988 he was Chairman of Dept. Family Practice, on the Executive Committee, on the Quality Assurance Committee, and on the Cancer Committee; from 1993 until 2000 he was on the Continuing Medical Education Committee; from 1997 until 2000 he was on the Ischemic Stroke Pathway Improvement Committee; from 1988 until 2005 he was on the Committee on Program Directives with Quillen College of Medicine; from 1989-2007 he was Medical Director Wellmont Holston Valley Home Health; and from 1989 until 1998 Medical Director Wellmont Holston Valley Hospice. At Highlands Physicians, Inc IPA he was on the Board of Directors from 1999 until present and was on the Vice Chairman Credentials Committee from 1995 until present. At Mountain Region Family Medicine he was on the Board of Directors from 1994 until 1997, and again from 1998 until 2001 and was President of Board of Directors from 1999 until 2001. He was a devoted member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church where he volunteered at the Friendship Diner as well as Friends in Need.

Arthur is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Kathi Boyd; children, Bryan Boyd, Brooke Boyd Seal and husband Charlton Seal, and James Boatright and wife Tina; grandchildren, James Boatright, Jr. and wife Brook, Augustina Whetzel, London Seal, Marlo Seal; along with an honorary grandchild Katie Fillers. He is also survived by his special friends and family, his cousins; Mary Katherine Jackson and husband Carl; Ann Ratliff, Betty Smith, Donna Bandy; Keith Boyd and wife Debbie who was like a brother; and his nurse for 27 years, Barbara Edwards; along with a host of friends and extended family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 5 pm until 7 pm at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow with Dr. Randy Frye officiating.

An entombment service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 11 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bryan Boyd, Charlton Seal, James Boatright, Keith Boyd, Frank Fillers and Audie Hinkle. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Inquirers Sunday School Class. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 am.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Holston Home for Children, or a local animal shelter of your choice.
