Dorothy Hicks Obituary

Dorothy Mae Begley Hicks

August 28, 1947 -

July 26, 2025

"My Day Will Come, When I Reach That City"

On July 26, 2025, Dorothy Mae Begley Hicks's day came.

Dorothy was born August 28, 1947 to Stonewall Jackson (Jack) and Ida Baker Begley. The baby of 11 children. The name "Dorothy" means "A gift from God".

Dorothy married Jessee Hicks on May 25, 1964. Their marriage was "No bed of roses". But they worked hard and produced two God fearing children – Pam and Jessee Jr. Dorothy and Jessee were married 59 ½ years.

"One Day At A Time Sweet Jesus"

Dorothy was taught about God at home and at Green's Chapel with the Cumberland Mountain Missionaries. Dorothy was named after missionary- "Dorothy Foster". She accepted God at a revival at Valley Creek Church held by Preacher Bill Bice. Preacher Bice told her that "She had a song to sing."

"I Can't Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand"

Dorothy sang gospel songs in churches and at funerals for over 50 years. She would sing with her husband Jessee, cousin - Alice Baker Begley and "very special cousin and friend" – Walter Peak. Later she would sing with Ricky Mann and Danny Darnell.

"God on Mountain is still God in Valley"

Dorothy loved Big Stoney Creek and High Knob. She and Jessee were never happy being off of Stoney Creek. Dorothy was the elected 5th District Supervisor of Scott County from year 2000-2004 and during the Big Stoney Creek flooding.

"Supper Time In Heaven"

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Edith B. Chandler, Carl (Bud) Begley, Ochia B. Chandler, Cecil (Cassie) Begley, Bonnie B. (Parker) Chandler, Lawrence (Goodman) Begley, Opal B. Durham, Ted Begley and Alice B. Dickenson (sister who cared for her as a baby).

Also preceded in death by in-laws, Harry Hicks, Beatrice Ryan Hicks, Connie H. Mullins, Joe Hicks and G. Bryce Gillenwater.

Dorothy is survived by daughter, Pam and son, Jessee Jr.; only surviving of her ten siblings is her brother, W.C. Begley and wife Doris; sisters-in-law, Nina O. Begley and Faye H. Gillenwater; along with lots of nieces and nephews.

Special nephew, Rick Begley and special niece, Linda Brickey. Special cousins and friends, Alice B. Begley and Billy and Lisa Begley.

It was with honor and love that Pam and Junior cared for their mom (mommy). Dorothy did not like the label "Mother".

Dorothy wanted to be cremated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carter Cemetery, c/o Jessica Begley, 9178 Hunters Valley Rd W, Duffield, VA 24244.

So sorry to hear of Dorothy's passing. Last time I saw her, she showed us Green's chapel. We asked her for some CDs of her singing. I still listen to them. I will cherish them from now on.

I didn't really get to know Dorothy until I moved back from Florida in 2007. She welcomed me like she had know me forever. She always tried to include me and Dad in anything she had going on. She was the one who started everyone singing Happy Birthday to my Dad at his birthday party we had for him. She had a way of making you feel welcome. She will be missed but she is singing with family and friends once again.
