GATE CITY, VA - Earl Mays 67, of Gate City passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Earl was born in Wise, VA and lived most of his life in Defiance, Ohio before returning to Gate City. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a track vehicle mechanic. Earl loved working on cars, fishing, movies, and helping others. He always put the needs of others before himself. His greatest joys in life came from his friends, family, and most of all his dog Tonto. Earl was a loving father, son, and brother who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Riley and Jeanette Hubert Mays; sisters, Georgia Lee Mays, Loretta Mansfield, Frampton Mays, and Brenda Mays; brother, Raymond Mays.
Survivors include his daughter, Christy Gutierrez and husband Joel; grandchildren, Dream Rovira, Destiny Derrick, and Faith Frost; brothers, Robert "Bob" Mays, Roy Mays, and Samuel Mays; sisters, Patsy Carlston, Lois Perrin, Emmaline Mays, Linda Roddy, and Margaret Mays; mother of his child, Hyesuk Peak; along with a host of friends and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Scott County Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will follow with military honors conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 and Pastor Alen Cooper officiating.

Earl was always so kind and helpful. He was my mother's neighbor for several years, and was always willing to offer a helping hand. He will be greatly missed. RIP Earl.
