ROGERSVILLE - Eulah Marie Vaughan Hurd, age 95, of Rogersville, passed away at home on November 27, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. Eulah was born July 7, 1928 to Charles F. Vaughan Sr. and Irene Tate Vaughan. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl R. Hurd; son, Robert A. Hurd; sisters, Ruby Vaughan Phillips (Lyle) and Billie Vaughan Barrett (Elbert); brother, Charles F. Vaughan Jr. and sister-in-law, Mable Vaughan Jones. Survivors include daughter, Anna Hurd Beverly (Roger); son, Chris Hurd; daughter-in-law, Sharon Hurd; granddaughters, Catie Murph Mitchell (Chris), Emily Hurd Saldana (Dave), and Whitney Hurd (fiancé, Adam Alder); and great grandchildren, Avery Jane and Mason Mitchell; Ian and Reece Saldana.
Eulah was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church in Stanley Valley and faithfully attended while physically able. She was a member of WMU and served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher through the years. She also served on the Farm Bureau Women's Committee.
Eulah graduated from Surgoinsville High School in 1946 and was able to obtain enough college credits for a teacher's certificate. Her teaching career began in one-room schools in Hawkins County and continued at Surgoinsville Elementary. By completing summer school, Saturday classes, and correspondence courses Eulah received her BS degree in 1968 from Lincoln Memorial University. She retired after nearly 40 years of service from the Hawkins County Board of Education. Her students loved "Ms. Hurd", not for her teaching skills but for her kind and compassionate spirit.
A special thank you to caregivers Chris and Vickie and hospice nurse Callie for your dedicated care. We will so miss our "Nannie".
