DANVILLE, PA - Fred Elwood Hossler died peacefully at home in Danville, Pennsylvania on January 4, 2026. He was 84.

Fred grew up in Hamburg, PA. He received a BS in Biology from Muhlenberg College, an MS in Microbiology from Penn State University, and a Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Colorado. Fred completed his post-doctoral work at Yale University.

Fred started his career as a teaching professor and researcher in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at LSU Medical School in New Orleans before moving to Johnson City, TN where he continued his work at the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. During his 30 years at ETSU he was voted professor of the year 9 times and taught hundreds of physicians, including his son Eric. He excelled at using an electron microscope and his research led to 55 scientific publications. In 2014, while professor emeritus, he achieved his life dream of publishing a textbook on histology.

Fred enjoyed fishing, gardening, beekeeping, photography, and woodworking and was a proud Eagle Scout.

Fred is predeceased by parents LeRoy and Mildred Hossler, and his older brother Dana.

He is survived by Susan, his wife of 51 years; his sons Kurt, Eric (Nichole), and Mark (Nicole); 6 grandchildren; his younger brother Keith (MaryLou); and several nieces and nephews.

The family plans to hold a private celebration of life.
