James Bowen August 20, 1931 - September 11, 2024
GATE CITY, VA - James Ellic Bowen, Jr., 93, passed away, Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
James was born in Scott County, VA, on August 28, 1931, to the late James Ellic Bowen Sr., and Dora (Babb) Bowen.
James was an ordained minister in 1964 and was Pastor and a lifetime member of Marble Point Baptist Church. He also served in the Korean War.
He and his wife, Charlotte were owner/operators of Shanks Variety Store in Gate City, VA. He retired from AFG in Hawkins County, TN. He also retired from Scott County School systems as a school bus driver.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Charlotte (Benton) Bowen of 59 years; sister, Wilma Jean Bowen, and brothers, Paul, Olin, and Gary Bowen preceded him in death.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Dorothy Saylor, Jonesborough, TN; brothers, Roger (Violet) Bowen, Gate City, VA, Richard (Janie) Bowen, Colonial Heights, TN, Johnny (Debbie) Bowen, Church Hill, TN, Robert Bowen, Johnson City, TN; sisters-in-law, Vilas Bowen, Gate City, VA, Charlene Bowen, Kingsport, TN, and Carolyn Bobbitte (Darrell), Weber City, VA; and brother-in-law, David Benton (Judy),. Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-3p.m., Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 3:00p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Danny Sykes, and Brother Danny Bostic officiating. Oak Glen Singers, and Nate and Shirley Phillips will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11:00a.m., Monday, September 16, 2024, at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN, Post #265, Gate City, VA, National Guard Honors Team.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

I went to Marble Point Church for several years with my (deceased) husband Jim Spears. We loved Preacher JW Bowen. He lived a long life and I will miss him.
