HILTONS, VA – James E. "Jim" Bowlin, 87, passed away at Holston Valley Medical Center on May 28th, 2023, following a period of declining health.
Jim was born on May 24th, 1936, to the late Claude and Mary Bowlin of Hiltons, VA. He was preceded in death by siblings, Jean Wilson, Bill Bowlin, and Elder John Bowlin. He is survived by sisters, Sue Johnson of Gray, TN, Brenda (Joe) Horton of Hiltons, VA, brother, Kenneth Bowlin (Melinda) of Greeneville, TN, sister-in-law, Brenda Bowlin of Bristol, TN, fourteen nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, and a host of friends.
Following retirement from Eastman after 27 years of service he enjoyed working on his farm and was an active member of his community, serving terms on the Scott County School Board, Scott County Farm Bureau, and Scott County Farmer's CO-OP. Jim also was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and Masonic Lodge #35 of Gate City, VA. He was a long-time member of Hiltons Volunteer Fire Department and was honored as a lifetime member for his service.
He attended church at Blue Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Hiltons, VA and was the song leader, deacon, and trustee. He also sang tenor in the Bowlin Family Singers for over 59 years performing in numerous churches throughout the area and countless funeral services.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 31st, 2023 from 3 pm to 7 pm at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, VA. Services will follow with Elder Chris Salley and Elder Gary Hall officiating and music provided by Mt. Holston Trio.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Spurrier Cemetery, Hiltons, VA at 11 am. Those wishing to attend are to meet at the funeral home at 10 am.
Pallbearers are nephews, Gary and Roger Wilson, Chuck and Jared Bowlin, Brad and Matt Bowlin, Jason and Jimmy Horton, and Mark Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers are Lanny Bright, Donnie Mann, Don Bays, Dale Sanders, Grady Blalock, Jim Woods, and special friends, Frank Gilliam and Earl Lee Dotson.
The Bowlin family would like to extend special thanks to the ICU and fifth floor nursing staff at Holston Valley Center for their excellent care in our time of need.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Blue Springs Primitive Baptist Church or Spurrier Cemetery at 7514 Bristol Highway, Hiltons, VA 24258.

So sorry to hear about Jim. He was a very nice, sweet and kind man. Jim was a friend to our family (the Tates) as long as I can remember. I don't think he ever met a stranger. He would always speak to you every time you saw him. Go Rest High on That Mountain.
