James Grigsby Obituary

James "Mag" Grigsby

November 8, 2025

CHURCH HILL - James "Mag" Grigsby, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

James was raised in Nickelsville, VA, and graduated from Nickelsville High School. He was a person who never met a stranger and was loved by many.

James was an avid sports fan of which his favorite was watching his grandchildren play whatever sport they had at the time. He also loved to hunt, fish and garden, but most of all he loved to serve the Lord and was a member of Oak Glen Baptist Church in Yuma, VA.

James was retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 32 years of service, he also proudly served his community as an Alderman for the City of Church Hill for 13 years, along with working part time at Holston Medical Group and Toyota of Kingsport.

James is Preceded in death by his parents Lilburn and Hazel Grigsby, sister, Polly Marshall, brother, Carl Grigsby.

James is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carolyn Grigsby; son Kevin Grigsby and wife Rachel; grandchildren, Hayden James and Landry Kate Grigsby; sisters, Eva Hensley, Betty Salyer, Mary Lou Meade, Peggy (George) Barbour; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Danny Sykes and Pastor Darrell Fletcher officiating. A graveside service will follow at Church Hill Memory Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers will be the officers of the Church Hill Police Department.

Honorary pallbearers will be James' childhood friends from Scott County and former Eastman coworkers.

In Lieu of flowers the family ask that contributions be made to Jericho Shriners Hospital for Children's Hospital 1100 Jericho Dr Blountville, TN 37617 as James was patient there in the 1950's.
