Jean Matheson April 5, 2024
PALM CITY - Jean went to her heavenly home, reuniting with her beloved husband Jim and identical twin, Janet on April 5 after a long battle with 3 terminal lung diseases. She fought valiantly to extend her life for her friends and family, for which we are eternally grateful.
In some of her last words, she spoke about her charmed life. Born to Paul and Ruth Scott in Kingsport TN, she grew up in a sweet small town where everyone knew "the twins", and her brother Bodie. A pioneering spirit, she blazed trails as one of the first women admitted to Emory University, later graduating with honors from the University of Georgia. It was at Emory where she met her soulmate, Jim.
They moved to West Palm Beach where they thrived, having 2 children Jay Matheson (Tonya) and Janet Gerds (Robert).
Jean was active in the Junior League, writing and producing a documentary about Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner, and helping produce their annual show houses. Jean became a historian, documenting much of South Florida history. As a genealogist she traced the branches of her family trees, publishing 4 books on their forebears.
In 1991, Jim and Jean moved to their waterfront dream home in Stuart FL, designed largely by Jean.
Along the way, they traveled the world, amassed countless friends, and 3 wonderful grandchildren: Ryan, Sean, and Laura Matheson. Recently, Jean welcomed step-grandchildren Kelsey and Jake Syers into the family.

Bob and I have so many wonderful memories of Jean. As Jim said " she sparkled". We loved our Sunday lunches together sharing our faith and our lives. Jean was an amazing woman whose gifts brightened our world. She adored her family and was fiercely protective of them. Although petite in stature she was mighty in spirit. Her beautiful spirit will live on in all who were lucky enough to know her. We are so sorry to miss her service but we are out of town attending a family reunion. We are sending our love and prayers your way. May God hold you all close as you travel this difficult road. With our deepest sympathy. Bob and Sarah Johnson
