James Lawson
DRYDEN, VA – Michael James Lawson, 69, of Lee County, Virginia entered into eternal rest on July 19, 2025. He was born on Jan. 29, 1956 to Harmon James Lawson and Eva (Hood) Hunter in Pennington Gap, Virginia.
Michael was a brick mason by trade and took pride in his work. He enjoyed horticulture and maintained a garden of different varieties of plants, including vegetables and flowers such as canna bulbs and geraniums. Michael was a passionate music listener and loved rock and roll. He enjoyed telling the story of the time he took a security job at the Indiana Black Expo just to see James Brown perform.
Michael was proud of his three daughters and loved them dearly. He enjoyed coaching their youth basketball teams, including a championship season. He was an avid Indiana Pacer fan. He loved being outdoors camping and fishing.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Harmon James Lawson, grandparents Belle and Ezra Hood and Harmon Sr. and Bessie Lawson, niece April Dorton.
He is survived by his mother Eva Hunter; sisters Zendral Edwards, Pam Robinson, Cynthia Adams; brothers Randy (Marlene) Hunter, Kevin Lawson; daughters Christina (Ryan) Lawson, Kayci (Calvin) Lawson, and Madison Lawson; grandchildren Genesis, Emery, Sterling and Gunner; special nephew Chris (Cassie) Dorton and dear friend Denia Music and many beloved family and friends.
The family would like to thank all the medical staff and representatives at Norton Community Hospital and Donor Life American. A celebration of life to honor Michael will be held on Saturday, October 11th from 1 pm to 5 pm at Natural Tunnel State Park, 1420 Natural Tunnel Parkway, Duffield, VA, Shelter #5. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider becoming an organ donor or donate to the charity of your choice.
