KINGSPORT - Heman Ray Adams, 83, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday August 26, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Chuckey, TN, he grew up in Greene County. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served 2 years in Fort Benning, Georgia before being honorably discharged. Ray loved spending time with his family, sitting on his porch and talking with people, watching old TV shows and going to Café 93. He was an incredible Dad, Papaw and friend. He was a kind man who was nice to everyone he met. Ray never met a stranger. He was a man who loved quietly but loved big.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Moley and Nannie Adams.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Regina Ellsworth and husband, Brian of Murfreesboro; bonus daughter, Rebecca Jones Lopez and husband, Alex of Athens, TN; bonus son, Mark Jones of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Hannah, Cierra, Sarah and Julianne; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn Ray Davis.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Posts 3/265. Those wishing may wear blue to the service, Ray's favorite color.
Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
