Richard Hanners Obituary

Reverend Dr. Richard Edwards Hanners, 82, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Born on September 3, 1943, in Hogansville, Georgia, Richard was the son of Earl James Hanners Sr. and Doris Emery (Edwards) Hanners. He earned his undergraduate degree and Master of Education from West Georgia College and went on to receive his Doctorate of Education from the University of Georgia. His academic journey continued with a Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, reflecting his lifelong dedication to learning and service.

Dr. Hanners served honorably in the United States Navy as Ship's Yeoman aboard the U.S.S. Adroit (MSO-509), an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and commitment. Following his military service, he pursued a successful career as a psychologist, where his intellect and leadership left a lasting impression. Later in life, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church and served faithfully at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Rock Hill.

A devoted fan of University of Georgia football, Rick cheered passionately for his beloved "Dawgs" each season.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Owen; his brother, Mike (Edna) Hanners; his children, David (Julie) Hanners and Scott (Debe) Hanners; and stepchildren Laura (James) Workman McConnell and Owen (Sunny) Workman. He was a proud grandfather to Michael (Emily) Hanners, Amy (Edward) Oehlman, Elizabeth Hanners, Abby Hanners, Chase (Lindsay) Small, Jackson Hanners, Mitchell (Aislinn) McConnell, Alexander McConnell, Wesley Workman, Mathew Workman, Amanda (Joey) Reid, Mia (Jeremy) Palmer Ross, Garret Palmer, and Wren Palmer. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Maddie, Ross, Lucy, Max, Evelyn, and Corrine.

He was preceded in death by siblings Earl Hanners Jr., Robert Hanners, Melissa (Smith) Hanners, Marie (Johnson) Hanners, and Debbie (Martin) Hanners.

A service to celebrate Rick's life will be held at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on November 21 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour (144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730).

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice & Community Care of Rock Hill and UNC Rex Hospital for their compassionate care.

I´m sorry to hear of Rick´s passing. He was a very good man and he was always nice to my mom and our family. I pray that Susie and the family will find comfort in knowing that he´s with the Lord.
