Richard Phillip Lewis November 13, 1951- May 8, 2024
BRISTOL - Richard Phillip Lewis, age 72 of Bristol, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. He was a son of the late Claude and Alverta Johnson Lewis, born to them on November 13, 1951, in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was a member of the Pleasant View Global Methodist Church of Abingdon, Virginia. Richard earned his master's degree and worked as a software engineer before retiring. He also taught biology as an adjunct professor at Virginia Highlands Community College. Aside from his career, he greatly enjoyed being outdoors on his farm, spending time with his dogs and simply enjoying nature. He was a member of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and was a Master Bird Bander for the United States Geological Survey and the State of Tennessee. Richard was also a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Alverta Lewis.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Vickie Lewis; his daughter, Amanda Lewis-Nang'ea (Dominic); his son, Phillip Lewis; a granddaughter, Naima Claire Nang'ea; a sister, Elaine Smith; a brother, Gary Lewis; and many other relatives and friends left behind to cherish his memory.
There will be no formal services at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Helping Hands Ministry of the Pleasant View Global Methodist Church (18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia, 24201) or to the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center (P.O. Box 1763, Bristol, Tennessee 37621) in loving memory of Richard.
